Picture description

Otenmatsu Chokichi was born around 1849 in Marugame, Kagawa Prefecture, and is believed to have passed away between 1901 and 1905.

His family owned a buckwheat noodle shop in Kanda, and he was a big boy from childhood. In 1857, he re-entered the sumo world and became an early rikishi in the November tournament, and in 1867, he joined the rank of makuuchi and competed with Sakaigawa Namiemon (later yokozuna), who joined the rank of makuuchi at the same time, and their matches were very popular. He was promoted to kobune in April 1869, held the sanyaku rank for eight years, and was promoted to sekiwake in March 1871. After his retirement, he became an inspector and devoted himself to training apprentices, but died at the end of 1889.
